The Orangery, Maidstone
Kent Wedding Venue Spotlight : The Orangery
If you've been scrolling through Kent wedding venue inspo and The Orangery in Maidstone keeps popping up - trust me, it deserves the hype. I've had the pleasure of photographing at this venue multiple times, and I can honestly say it’s one of my favourite venues in Kent. There’s lots of space, variety and nature, as well as a lovely team who take really good care of couples and suppliers alike.
So if you're a couple wondering whether The Orangery is right place to get married for you, or you're trying to figure out which ceremony space to choose, let me give you my honest opinon of all three as a documentary wedding photographer.
What Makes The Orangery Special (from Behind the Lens)
The Orangery is located in Maidstone just off a main road, so it’s super easy to get to. But the moment you step through the gates into the landscaped gardens, you completely forget about the world outside. It genuinely feels like a secret. There's a private lake, a cascading waterfall, sweeping lawns, and woodland paths. For a documentary photographer like me, this is a dream: every corner is beautiful yet doesn’t steal attention from the main event, and couples have the space to just be rather than being marched from shot to shot.
The venue is exclusively yours on your wedding day, which makes a huge difference photographically. No strangers wandering into your couple portraits. No mistaking which wedding I’m photographing today (my worst nightmare and totally avoided by lots of pre-wedding communication). Just you, your people, and the gardens.
The Three Ceremony Spaces (And What Each Looks Like in Photos)
One of the things that makes The Orangery stand out in Kent is that it offers three distinct ceremony spaces. Each has its own mood, light, and feel, and each will give your photos a completely different character.
1. The Garden Room
The Garden Room is the only indoor ceremony option, which means it works in any season, any weather (essential for a British wedding - something lots of venues seem to forget).
It’s not a bland conference room. This space has double doors spanning the front facade that open up in the summer, a stunning skylight overhead, and the view of the lake in front. The natural light floods in from above, which is the kind of thing photographers very much love.
You can walk to the ceremony area from the getting ready suite across a bridge, with guests watching through those glass doors - it’s genuinely cinematic. If you're getting married in winter or just don't want to gamble on the weather (wise), the Garden Room gives you that indoor-outdoor feeling without any of the risk. Plus even if you choose another option for your ceremony, you can still use the Garden Room for an indoor reception area or for teas and coffees.
Best for: year-round weddings, couples who want don’t want any weather anxiety, anyone who loves natural light.
2. The Gazebo: Classic Garden Ceremony Vibes
The Gazebo is across the bridge from the Garden room and is the classic outdoor ceremony option. It seats up to 150 guests and offers that quintessential garden wedding feel. Surrounded by the manicured grounds, with the gardens as your backdrop, it's romantic without trying too hard.
From a photography perspective, I love the Gazebo for the natural backdrop variety. Depending on the season, there's lush greenery, blooms, or that soft golden quality the grounds take on in autumn. It's available weather permitting during British Summertime, so if you've got a summer or early autumn date, it's a serious contender.
Best for: summer/early autumn weddings, couples who love that classic garden party aesthetic, anyone dreaming of saying "I do" under an open sky.
3. The Lapa: The Wildcard (And My Personal Favourite)
The Lapa is the other outdoor ceremony option and honestly, it's stunning. You reach it via a woodland walk. The Lapa itself has an wood frame and thatched roof, open on all sides, perched right alongside the lake. You've got views of the the lake and stunning woodland on either side.
As a photographer? I'm obsessed. The walk-in is immediately dramatic, the open sides mean soft, even light from all directions, and the amphitheatre type seating gives it a real community spirit feel. It's also just...really damn beautiful. If you want your wedding photos to look different from every other Kent venue, the Lapa is your answer.
Best for: couples who want something a bit different, nature lovers, anyone who wants their ceremony walk-in to be a full moment.
The Grounds: A Photographer's Gift
Beyond the ceremonies, The Orangery gives you nine acres of photo opportunities without ever feeling like you're working through a checklist:
The lake makes for a beautiful, painterly backdrop
The cascading waterfall is one of my favourite spots for a quiet couple portrait
The huge pine trees that bring that mystical woodland feel
Gorgeous lawns perfect for wide shots with guests during the drinks reception
Woodland paths that are gorgeous in dappled afternoon light
For a documentary photographer, all of this means I can follow you around and just capture what's happening: the laughter during the drinks reception, the guests exploring the grounds, the quiet moment the two of you steal by the lake, without needing to manufacture anything. The venue does the work.

Thinking About Who Photographs Your Orangery Wedding
One of the things I care about most is making sure you feel comfortable and seen on your wedding day, because the best documentary photos happen when people relax into the moment and genuinely experience their day. I work with all couples: LGBTQ+ couples, neurodivergent couples, people who hate having their photo taken, people who aren't sure what they want from their wedding photos yet, and the one thing they have in common is they value authenticity and the people they love over outdated traditions. And they want suppliers that truly get it and support them in their journey.
At a venue like The Orangery, I let the day unfold and follow it. I'm not pulling you away from your people for a thirty-minute photoshoot checklist. I'm watching for the moment your mum helps you adjust your outfit. The way your partner laughs when they're nervous. The confetti shot that's actually chaotic and perfect.
If you're planning a wedding at The Orangery, or any Maidstone venue for that matter - I'd love to chat.
