The Secrets to Planning Proposals
Tips from a proposal photographer
I absolutely adore photographing proposals. Something about the excitement leading up to it, being all sneaky on the day, and then witnessing the most magical moments before coming clean to make some incredible photos together while the emotions are bubbling over.
Last year I even had the joy of capturing a double proposal, which was totally epic. So here are my top tips for anyone planning their engagement.
1. Choose a meaningful location
It doesn't have to be all "meta" with its significance, but doing it in a beautiful nature spot when you both adore the outdoors adds a little something extra to your moment. Or why not go for the filming location of your favourite series?
2. Have an excuse for dressing up
I don't know about you, but I personally have two outfits: work and dog-walking. You can always use the excuse of a nice dinner after a stroll on the beach, cliffs, or park to get your partner into the idea of being a bit extra in the best possible way. That said, do whatever is most comfortable for you, because this is your story.
3. Pick a great photographer
What can I say - you’re going to want this captured, printed, and framed. And you want someone really good. (Like me!) I'd also highly recommend doing a couples shoot straight afterwards, because the raw happy emotions in those first moments are genuinely priceless.
4. Have a plan B
It can rain. It can be extremely windy. We can discuss flexible timing, a second location for bad weather, or (my recommendation) - both. A little contingency planning means nothing can spoil the moment.
5. Think of a signal for go time
Having a signal gives you clarity when emotions are running high, and lets your photographer know this is it. I'll be ready ahead of time and completely discreet, so that when you say "Hey, did you see that hawk/squirrel/dude doing somersaults in a tutu?" and whip out the ring, I’ll be photographing a memory of a lifetime.
6. Ask your photographer for help
For all of my proposals I jump on a planning call, because we all need someone to bounce ideas off of. Don't be shy about asking for time and exact location recommendations, adding little extra mementos to the spot, or anything else that will make your proposal feel perfectly you.
7. Enjoy the moment
Yes, it's daunting and overwhelming, and you want it to be perfect. But at the heart of it, you're asking your best friend and partner in crime and in life to keep on rocking on together. And that is genuinely one of the sweetest things there is.
