How Rainy Wedding Photos on Your Wedding Cannot Ruin The Day

Rainy wedding photos, while often seen as a hindrance, can truly transform your wedding experience. They add a layer of depth and emotion that sunny days might sometimes overshadow. The soft, diffused light that comes with overcast skies can create beautifully mellow photographs, enhancing the romantic atmosphere of your special day.

When the bride, J, reached out to me, I was immediately excited about their intimate, almost elopement style wedding. They wanted creative photography to match their non-traditional day and I definitely wanted to deliver some out-of-the-box stuff. We had a bit of an ambitious plan even though it was a short wedding. The idea was to cover prep in Deal, head over to Aberdeen House in Ramsgate for the ceremony while making a quick stop at the Deal Pier and then take couples photos in a few places in Ramsgate after the official bits were done. And then of course there was a small surprise for later….

Rainy wedding photos can also evoke a sense of nostalgia and timelessness. Capturing moments in the rain often brings out genuine joy and spontaneity, as couples embrace the unexpected. This not only reflects their love story but also allows for unique storytelling through imagery, showcasing how love can flourish in any circumstance.

Well the day comes around and we’re faced with a bit of a shitty albeit very British reality – it is pouring down like there’s no tomorrow. I was worried that this might happen and normally I have a clear umbrella in my car for just that, but the night before I just could not find it. So I go on Facebook marketplace, drive around shops in town and end up with 5 umbrellas. So future about-to-be-weds, I got you! Remember, rainy wedding photos can still be magical!

Getting ready is often one of the most intimate moments of the wedding day, filled with excitement, nerves, and anticipation. The laughter shared among friends while helping the bride get dressed, the tender moments of reflection, and the support of loved ones create a heartfelt atmosphere. Each detail, from the bridal bouquet to the rings, contributes to the memories that will be captured in photographs throughout the day.

Although we ran a bit behind schedule with hair and makeup—something that happens more often than not on wedding days—we managed to keep our spirits high. It’s crucial to remain flexible and adaptable to ensure that every moment is cherished. The first look, a pivotal moment filled with emotion, was particularly special as G saw his stunning bride for the first time amid the backdrop of a challenging yet beautiful setting.

The first look is often a cherished moment, filled with anticipation and emotion. J and G shared a heartfelt embrace, followed by a flurry of laughter as they appreciated the beauty of the day, rain and all. This intimate moment reinforced their love for each other, showcasing how the most significant aspects of a wedding are often those shared between just the two of them.

Getting Ready in Deal

We’ve been running a little bit behind on hair and makeup (happens all the time, that’s just one of those things you gotta plan for!). But it was a short coverage and we still needed to get to Ramsgate in time for the ceremony, so I was getting a little anxious of fitting in the first look and trip to the pier beforehand.

But we made it! And fortunately we had a bit of a break in the rain for G to see his gorgeous wife-to-be for the first time.

Pit Stop at Deal Pier

Pit stops during weddings can lead to some of the most memorable moments. The Deal Pier provided a stunning backdrop where the couple could take a breath, relax, and enjoy each other’s company before the official ceremony. Such spontaneous stops often allow couples a moment to connect amid the whirlwind of wedding activities.

Ceremony at Aberdeen House in Ramsgate

Each wedding ceremony has its own magic, especially in intimate venues like Aberdeen House. The warmth and charm of such locations often enhance the emotional weight of the vows exchanged. Their friends, acting as witnesses, added to the intimate atmosphere, creating an experience filled with love and support.

After the ceremony, the couple was eager to capture the joy of their newlywed status. Each click of the shutter captured not only their smiles but the genuine happiness radiating between them, serving as a testament to their love story.

Even though it was quite the military operation to squeeze in all the morning bits, we made it on time to the registry office and both the bride & groom were eager with anticipation to tie the knot legally and celebrate their union. You are typically required to have witnesses, so J & G had their two friends be part of their day while still keeping it small and intimate.

Wedding Photos at Ramsgate Beach

Despite the chilly weather, Ramsgate beach offered an exciting opportunity for capturing stunning visuals. The contrast of the grey sky and the vibrant colours of their attire created a striking aesthetic. We embraced the elements, allowing the rain to be a part of their story rather than a hindrance.

The beach, with its wild winds and rain, provided a unique backdrop for their photos. The drizzle transformed into a gentle sprinkle that added a surreal quality to the images, making them appear even more romantic and ethereal. We moved quickly, shooting various poses, but the laughter and joy shared between them produced some stunning candid shots.

Secret Send-Off in Dover

And that was going to be the end of it, but did you really think I could just let these two go without a fuss?

J&G had planned to go on their honeymoon to France and later that day after they’d warmed up and had their celebratory drinks, I met them at the train station in Dover to send them out with a bang. And boy was it worth it!!!

That final touch, the surprise send-off, was a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable day. I met them at the Dover Priory train station, and the excitement was palpable. With celebratory drinks in hand, we captured their final moments before they set off on their journey. This added an exhilarating note to the day, and the photos from this moment are some of the most cherished.

Ultimately, the experience of a wedding is about embracing the unexpected, and rainy wedding photos exemplify this beautifully. They tell a story of resilience, love, and joy against all odds. J and G’s wedding was a perfect reminder that every moment, whether sunny or rainy, is worth capturing and celebrating.
